Port Royal Sands Beach

A trip to Beaufort, SC is not quite complete without making a five-minute drive south to experience the Port Royal Sands Beach and observation tower. Traversing the waterway along the wide boardwalk and climbing the multi-story tower promises expansive Lowcountry views from a height you can’t reach anywhere else.

Make the most of your time at this hidden gem of a destination with our guide. Read on to hear about our favorite things to do Port Royal!

Port Royal Sands Beach

Located conveniently at the southernmost tip of Port Royal, Sands Beach is open to the public and features multiple boat ramps and a strip of sandy shore along Battery Creek. It’s the perfect centrally located spot to put your toes in the sand if you don’t have time to make it out to Hilton Head Island or Hunting Island beaches. It is open from dawn to dusk and completely free.

You can drive right on to the beach and park on the sand. Bring snacks and water (or pack a whole picnic) because this is no tourist beach. You won’t find a row of beachfront restaurants and shops here; Sands Beach is a true locals spot.

Known for its collection of shark teeth and laid back atmosphere, this is a great place to feel the breeze in your hair and sun on your face.

Port Royal Boardwalk and Observation Tower

Get your legs ready - the climb to the top of the Port Royal observation tower is four stories but it is most certainly worth it. Once you reach it you are able to see for miles in every direction!

Look out toward Beaufort, Lady’s Island and Parris Island where the Beaufort River and Battery Creek meet. Take in the stunning sights of the Lowcountry’s famous naturescape, untouched in almost every way.

Enjoy the many species of birds overhead, watching the playful dolphins swim and feed, and you may even see a shrimping boat coming in.

Eat at Fishcamp Port Royal

From atop the tower, you can see one of our favorite yummy spots, Fishcamp on 11th. A short drive from the beach to the other side of the lower peninsula of Port Royal will put you smack dab in front of this excellent restaurant. Featuring fantastic fresh food and drink, you can also enjoy gorgeous views from a different vantage point.

If you’re in the mood for a Bloody Mary, we think they may have the very best one in all of the Lowcountry! When it comes to dining, the seafood dishes cannot be beaten. Watch fisherman bring the days’ haul right up the dock and into the kitchen. No matter your taste, you can’t go wrong here because every drink and dish is made expertly with items as fresh as you can imagine.
