Getting Here and Getting Around
The Lowcountry
One of the biggest misconceptions about moving to the South Carolina Lowcountry is that it's remote.
In reality, Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort, and the surrounding communities are remarkably well connected. Residents enjoy the relaxed pace of coastal living while remaining within easy reach of major cities, international airports, world-class healthcare, and business centers throughout the Southeast.
Whether you're relocating permanently, purchasing a second home, or planning frequent travel, transportation is rarely a challenge.
Relocation Insight
Many buyers initially worry that moving to the Lowcountry means sacrificing convenience. Most discover the opposite.
You can spend the morning on the beach, catch an afternoon flight, enjoy dinner in Savannah, or take a weekend trip to Charleston without feeling like you've traveled far at all. The combination of coastal living and regional accessibility is one of the reasons so many people choose to make this area home.
Location and Approximate Drive Times
Easy Air Travel
Whether you're traveling for business, welcoming family, or flying to a second home, residents have several excellent airport options.
Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH)
Located directly on Hilton Head Island, HHH is one of the area's greatest conveniences.
Recent terminal improvements and expanded airline service have made flying in and out of the island easier than ever.
You'll find nonstop service to several major hubs, making one-stop travel available to nearly anywhere in the country.
Ideal for:
- Weekend trips
- Business travelers
- Seasonal homeowners
- Visiting family
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV)
Just 45 minutes from Bluffton and approximately one hour from Hilton Head Island, Savannah offers significantly more nonstop destinations and flight options.
Many full-time residents use SAV as their primary airport because of:
- A larger selection of airlines
- More nonstop flights
- Competitive airfare
- International connections
- Rental car availability
Charleston International Airport (CHS)
About two hours north, Charleston provides another excellent option, especially for international travel or destinations not served from Savannah or Hilton Head.
Many residents choose whichever airport offers the most convenient schedule.
Nonstop Flights
Residents enjoy convenient nonstop service to many major cities, including:
- Atlanta
- Charlotte
- Washington, DC
- New York
- Boston
- Philadelphia
- Chicago
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- Nashville
- Detroit
- Cleveland
- Cincinnati
- Minneapolis
- Baltimore
Airline schedules continue to expand each year, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Local Transportation
Traveling by Car
Unlike many resort destinations, the Lowcountry is easy to explore by car.
US Highway 278 serves as the primary corridor connecting Hilton Head Island with Bluffton and Interstate 95, making travel throughout the Southeast straightforward.
Interstate 95 is only about 20 to 30 minutes from Bluffton and provides direct north-south access along the East Coast.
That means weekend trips to Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, or Atlanta are realistic without requiring a flight.
Daily Transportation
While most residents own a vehicle, many communities reduce the amount of driving required.
Depending on where you live, you may find yourself:
- Walking to restaurants
- Riding bikes to the beach
- Using golf carts within your community
- Boating to waterfront restaurants
- Enjoying miles of leisure trails
Hilton Head Island alone offers more than 60 miles of public pathways, making it one of the country's premier bicycle-friendly communities.
Getting Around Each Community
Hilton Head Island
- Extensive pathway network
- Public beaches
- Resort trolley service (seasonal)
- Short drives between amenities
- Heavy summer tourism traffic along US 278
Bluffton
- Primarily automobile-oriented
- Growing trail network
- Excellent regional highway access
- Convenient shopping and healthcare
- Easy commute to Savannah and Hilton Head
Beaufort
- Walkable historic downtown
- Waterfront parks and marinas
- Spanish Moss Trail
- Less congestion than larger coastal communities
- Easy access to Hunting Island and surrounding sea islands
Relocation Tip
Don't limit your home search based solely on the nearest airport. Many longtime residents regularly use both Hilton Head Island Airport and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, choosing whichever offers the best flight schedule or fare.
Having multiple airport options within a short drive is an advantage few coastal destinations can match.
