Downtown Beaufort

Downtown Beaufort is primarily centered along Bay Street, a historic commercial street that runs along the borders of the Beaufort River. Beaufort's downtown, which earned its own place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, is easily one of the most visited and all-encompassing "attractions" that this coastal community has to offer. The expansive series of standard city blocks feature a wide variety of historical residences, gardens, houses of worship, and ancient graveyards, and the fantastic history and antebellum legacy can be admired in person around virtually every street corner.

Historic Beaufort House

Beaufort is the second oldest town in South Carolina, originally established in 1711. The 304-acre area comprising the original town was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Beaufort’s important historic and architectural character from 1710 to 1861 was further recognized when the district was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The Beaufort Historic District is significant for both its history and architecture. It is significant as a center of antebellum plantation culture in South Carolina and for its role during the Civil War, and in African-American history during and after the war. Laid out along the dazzling scenery of the Beaufort River, Downtown Beaufort offers nothing less than the quintessential small-town experience. The charm on display along Bay Street and down to Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park exemplifies the Southern hospitality that has made Beaufort the Queen of the Sea Islands.

Downtown Beaufort

Homes in the Historic District cover a wide range of price determined largely by the home’s pedigree, condition and location. Many homes have been painstakingly renovated over the past 20 years and include updated electric systems, HVAC and insulation. Others remain a work in progress and there are some still in need of major TLC. Exterior changes to homes in the Historic District must be reviewed and approved by the City as part of the overall effort to preserve the District’s integrity.

Within walking distance of Historic District homes are dozens of restaurants, the city’s Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and pavilion, quaint shops along Bay Street and adjoining downtown streets and alleys, and 300 years of Lowcountry history.

And the best part of this eminently walkable Southern paradise is the dazzling array of luxury homes and waterfront homes all located centrally to downtown’s shopping and dining. Step just a few blocks up along streets laid out in a classic downtown grid and you’re immersed in some of the most charming real estate in the south.

Southern grandeur and elegance abound among the homes of Downtown Beaufort, where sweet magnolias blossom around every door and front porch living has never been more peaceful. If it’s small-town charm with big-city amenities you’re looking for, you’ll find it all just steps from your front porch.
