Set along nearly 12 miles of stunning beach where Port Royal Sound joins the Atlantic Ocean, Port Royal exemplifies the beauty and tranquility of Hilton Head Island living.
Here, exclusivity and serenity abound in the island’s only completely private seaside residential community. Homeowners enjoy a friendly community ranging from young families to retirees sharing miles of pristine beachfront, three outstanding golf courses and luxurious amenities. And just beyond the front gates, a location right on the island’s “heel” places you in the heart of everything the island has to offer.
With over 900 single-family homes, homebuyers have plenty of real estate options that present a display of views from freshwater lagoons and manicured golf courses to saltwater estuaries and the dunes, beaches, and waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Port Royal Sound. Since much of Port Royal sits on elevated ground, the views from most homes are spectacular. Homesites range in size from 1/4 acre to well over 1 acre, perfect for a primary residence or a second home near the ocean. Home prices start at around $450,000 for entry-level bungalows and can reach upwards of several million dollars for prime oceanfront estate-sized homes. For those looking to build their dream homes from scratch, there are less than 75 undeveloped lots in various sizes.
Port Royal’s history stretches back centuries, to an age when Native Americans found these shores perfect for hunting and fishing. When Captain William Hilton bestowed the name “Hilton Head” to our island, it was in reference to the vast headlands in present-day Port Royal Plantation.
It was here that the Union Army made camp, in a small self-sustained town centered around what is now called Robber’s Row. Several decades later, as the Spanish-American war brought the threat of a maritime invasion, the army built a massive steam cannon in Port Royal. The remains of this magnificent weapon can still be seen today.
As much acclaim as Port Royal has earned for its stunning natural beauty; it’s equally renowned for its rich wealth of amenities.
Those who simply want to soak in that natural beauty will find endless trails to explore, guiding through serene forests to plentiful lagoons for fishing. Residents looking to stay active will find ample opportunities among the many tennis courts, pickleball court, and golf courses of the plantation.
Some of the available amenities and attractions include:
While membership in Port Royal Club is not mandatory, it is a popular option for property owners looking to experience the finest in Hilton Head golf and recreation. Among the three 18-hole courses, Barony, Planter’s Row, and Robber’s Row, you’ll find some of the most inspiring and challenging holes on Hilton Head Island. And the recent improvement project has seen the club’s amenities expand to include eight Har-Tru tennis courts, two pickleball courts, and an expansive outdoor deck basking in golf views.
Hilton Head Island is home to more than 24 championship courses, both public and private, designed by renowned golf architects like Robert Trent Jones Sr., Pete Dye, and Jack Nicklaus. The following is a list of public golf courses on Hilton Head Island including oceanfront courses, traditional parkland courses, and more.
