Charter One Realty Brings the Curtain Up on Bye Bye Birdie

There is something about live theatre in a small town that a screen just cannot replicate. The lights come up, the band starts, and for two and a half hours the whole room agrees to believe in Sweet Apple, Ohio again. That is exactly what happened this June when Main Stage Community Theatre brought Bye Bye Birdie to the stage, and Charter One Realty was honored to be the show’s proud sponsor.

About the Show: Bye Bye Birdie

Set in 1958, Bye Bye Birdie follows rock-and-roll idol Conrad Birdie after he is drafted into the Army. His songwriter and agent, Albert, along with Albert’s secretary and sometime girlfriend, Rosie, come up with a plan to send Birdie off with one last televised performance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The idea is to give Birdie’s new song, “One Last Kiss,” a national send-off and keep Almaelou Records afloat in the process. The plan includes a very public farewell kiss between Birdie and Kim MacAfee, the president of his fan club in small-town Sweet Apple, Ohio.

Naturally, nothing goes quite as planned. Kim’s father gets swept up in the idea of appearing on national television with his daughter, while Kim’s boyfriend, Hugo, is less than thrilled about the kissing arrangement. What follows is classic musical-comedy chaos, set to a bright, high-energy score that has entertained audiences since the show first premiered on Broadway.

Main Stage staged Bye Bye Birdie for two full weekends, June 18 through 21 and June 25 through 28, at Main Street Theatre in Hilton Head. Local performers of all ages filled out the cast, giving the production the homegrown charm that has become a signature of Main Stage’s work.

About Main Stage Community Theatre

Main Stage Community Theatre is a Bluffton and Hilton Head-based nonprofit dedicated to family-centered, community-driven live theatre. Every production is cast entirely with local talent, from children taking their first bow to seasoned community performers who have been on stage for decades.

Their mission is simple: create a place where performers can be part of something bigger than themselves, and where the community can gather around great storytelling.

Each year, Main Stage produces between two and four full-scale shows, ranging from Junior productions built around student performers to community shows that bring students and adults together on the same stage. A Look Back: Main Stage’s History

Main Stage’s roots run deep in this community. The organization began in the early 1990s as the Hilton Head Community and Youth Theater, staging early productions at the Community Playhouse on Dunnagans Alley. Over time, it evolved into Main Street Youth Theatre, performing at venues including Seahawk Auditorium at Hilton Head High School.

During the shortened 2020 COVID season, the organization refocused its mission and became Main Stage Community Theatre, the name and identity it carries today.

Since 1997, Main Stage has produced more than 90 shows, from early productions like Huckleberry Finn and Anne of Green Gables to more recent hits including The Odd Couple, Jekyll and Hyde, and Shrek the Musical. Today, the theatre draws nearly 4,000 guests each year, including local families and visitors discovering what the Lowcountry arts scene has to offer.

Over 30 years and counting, Main Stage has built one of the true cultural cornerstones of Hilton Head and Bluffton.

What’s Coming Up This Summer: 2026 Summer Camp

The curtain does not stay down for long at Main Stage. This summer, the theatre is running its 2026 Summer Camp, an original production called Broadway Goes Wrong. The story follows a chaotic opening night where the leading lady goes missing, a storm rolls in, the lights start flickering, and the theatre turns out to be double-booked.

Campers will build acting, singing, and dancing skills while working toward a live closing performance, set against a soundtrack of favorite Broadway numbers.

Camp runs July 6 through 16, Monday through Thursday, and is hosted at New Life Church in Bluffton. Space is limited to 40 campers, with both ensemble and featured performer tracks available. The two-week session wraps with a public closing show on Thursday, July 16.

Looking further ahead, Main Stage will bring the classic Neil Simon comedy Barefoot in the Park to the stage this fall.

Between the summer camp performances, the fall season, and everything Main Stage has planned beyond that, there is no shortage of reasons to keep an eye on this local theatre.
