Every year, in the heart of summer, Beaufort's sea island transforms into a magnificent stage for one of the South's most anticipated outdoor gatherings. The Beaufort Water Festival, a remarkable celebration, has evolved into a prominent event, captivating both locals and visitors alike. Although it has grown in significance and entertainment value, this community-driven, non-profit initiative remains deeply rooted in its origins. Let's delve into the history and evolution of this extraordinary festival that has become a highlight of the real estate gem, Beaufort.

Origins and Early Days:

Back in July 1956, the inaugural Beaufort Water Festival took place under the leadership of John Bigbee, the festival's first President, and with the assistance of Gladys Thompson, who supervised the visiting queens. The Lions Club enthusiastically assumed responsibility for organizing the first parade, a tradition they have diligently continued to this day.

During its early years, attending the festival's Beauty Pageant required a mere fifty cents, while couples could join the Water Festival Ball (later renamed the Commodore's Ball) for only one dollar. The Regatta Ball, another highlight, demanded a two-dollar admission fee. The opening weekend featured thrilling sailboat races and the elegant Regatta Ball. The following weekend commenced with the captivating Beauty Pageant, where the Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands was crowned. The second weekend, in addition to the Water Festival Ball, showcased a vibrant parade, an exhilarating ski show by the Beaufort Water Ski Club, and an awe-inspiring air show.

Expanding Horizons:

As the festival gained recognition, it attracted an increasing number of people from various parts of the state and even on a national scale. To accommodate diverse interests and cater to all age groups, additional events such as fishing and golf tournaments, craft markets, and Sponsors' and Community Non-Profit expos were incorporated into the festival's lineup.

All these exciting activities took place either within or adjacent to the municipal parking lot. However, in the rare event of inclement weather (which is euphemistically referred to as anything but "rain" during the festival), the pageant would relocate to the Beaufort Elementary School, while the captivating Balls would find a home in the Community Club.

The Festival Evolves:

The Beaufort Water Festival is a dynamic celebration that continually evolves to align with the preferences of festival-goers. Some events have been phased out to make room for new, exciting additions. Dedicated volunteers, numbering over 400, devote countless hours to ensure the festival's success. Their efforts, combined with the generous support of our loyal sponsors, enable the festival to offer top-notch entertainment at affordable prices.

Conclusion:

The Beaufort Water Festival has become an annual highlight on Beaufort's social calendar, drawing crowds from near and far to revel in its lively atmosphere. As this beloved event continues to embrace change, it remains firmly rooted in its community-driven origins. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor exploring the real estate wonders of Beaufort, don't miss the chance to experience the Beaufort Water Festival—an extravaganza that showcases the unique charm and vibrant spirit of this captivating sea island.
