Memorial Day in the Lowcountry

On behalf of everyone at Charter One Realty, we would like to take a moment to wish you a happy Memorial Day weekend! We extend our deepest gratitude to all our service members, veterans, and their families for their sacrifices and dedication. Your bravery will always be remembered. As we enjoy this long weekend, let's take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day. Join us in observing a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 PM to honor the fallen heroes.

This Memorial Day weekend, there are several events and activities taking place that you might find interesting:

  1. Memorial Day Parades: Many cities and towns organize parades to commemorate the holiday. Check your local community's website or newspaper for information on parades happening in your area. 

    • Beaufort, SC, is hosting its annual Beaufort Memorial Day Parade on Memorial Day at 10 a.m. The parade begins on Adventure Street and will follow its traditional route along Boundary Street, onto Carteret Street, Bay Street, and then end at the Beaufort National Cemetary. More info here
    • Savannah, GA - "Savanah Salutes" Memorial Day Weekend Celebration. Plant Riverside District will host the 2023 “Savannah Salutes” Memorial Day Celebration from Friday, May 26, through Monday, May 29. This patriotic four-day event will include a special Memorial Day presentation by the Veterans of Foreign Wars on the Montgomery Park Stage on Monday, May 29, at 5 p.m. as well as free live music and food and drink options for all ages throughout the holiday weekend. Throughout the holiday weekend, Plant Riverside District’s iconic smokestacks, fountains, and other familiar landmarks will be illuminated with red, white, and blue lights after dark.   2. National Moment of Remembrance: On Memorial Day at 3:00 PM local time, we are encouraged to observe a minute of silence to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for the safety and freedom of the country. 

  3. Operation FOB Memorial Day Light the Fire Commencement. 
    Join us on Saturday, May 27th as we take the fire we’ve been burning for 22 days in remembrance of the Veterans we’ve lost to suicide, and transfer it to a fire that will burn in honor of those we lost on the battlefield. The ceremony will kick off promptly at 12:00 at the fire pit by the barn. Then we will relocate to the back field where we will light a large bonfire around 12:45/1:00. This family-friendly event will include a cookout, cornhole, and bouncy houses. Join OPFOB while we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.   4. Outdoor Activities: With the arrival of warmer weather, many people take advantage of the long weekend to enjoy outdoor activities such as barbecues, picnics, hiking, camping, or visiting local parks and beaches. Hilton Head Island, SC is hosting a Memorial Day Ceremony in Veterans Park in Shelter Cove on Memorial Day from 9:30 am until noon.

    • Hilton Head Memorial Day Freedom Run 5K -The Freedom 5K is an opportunity to honor those who have served in the armed forces with a fun, family-friendly event. Participants are asked to run or walk with the American flag and to dress in their best red, white, and blue attire. Packet pick-up and late registration will be held on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Palmetto Running Company, which is at the Shelter Cover Towne Center at 28 Shelter Cove Lane #117. The first 400 runners will receive a Freedom Run 5K race shirt, and the first 300 will also receive a special Freedom Run dog tag. Read More Here
    • Hilton Head Island, SC - Memorial Day Ceremony in Veterans Park in Shelter Cove on Memorial Day from 9:30 am until noon.
    • Bluffton, SC Memorial Day Celebration - May 29th from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Buckwalter Place Park. The address is 2 Ventura Drive, Bluffton, SC 29910.
