Catch up with Mary as she talks to us about how she got her start, the changes she has seen in the Lowcountry, and her neighborhood in Bluffton, SC.

Mary AianaCharter One Realty: When did you know that you wanted to pursue a career in real estate?

Mary Aiana: Real estate has been in my blood since I worked in my dad’s real estate office when I was in high school! But I didn’t choose that career until 1991 when I moved back to Washington State and started working for Coldwell Banker.

Charter One Realty: Tell us about your start in the business. How did the first year go?

Mary Aiana: My first true year where that was my only income went well. Even though I had been IN real estate for over 20+ years it still made me realize how little I knew. Thank goodness I was with the Reed Team so I had good teachers.

Charter One Realty: What’s kept you in the business after your initial success?

Mary Aiana: I love the business, maybe not the stress, but helping people find their happy home!! I love working with people and helping them reach their goals whether buying or selling!

Charter One Realty: What’s one common mistake you see prospective buyers make?

Mary Aiana: Having preconceived ideas!

Charter One Realty: Where are you from originally, and how did you come to live in the Lowcountry?

Mary Aiana: I was born in Oregon, lived there until after college, and then moved to Hawaii for nearly 20 years!! I moved to the east coast after 7 Years in Las Vegas working for Pulte Homes! I moved to the Lowcountry in 2004 when I wanted to be closer to my daughter and her family.

Charter One Realty: Please tell us about your neighborhood and your home.

Mary Aiana: I live in a new community, The Landings, in Bluffton. We love our new home. Perfect! One level and it has all the rooms we need!

Charter One Realty: Can you tell us why your community is so special to you?

Mary Aiana:  It’s new, it’s small and convenient to all the new stuff going on in Bluffton!

Charter One Realty: How have you seen the Lowcountry change — from both a personal and professional perspective — over the years?

Mary Aiana: When I first came here in 2004, I could not understand why Bluffton had not grown much because it seemed to have everything.  I have come from areas where growth had already occurred and I saw the great potential here with climate, beauty and the charm of Bluffton and I could see the potential and now that the growth is happening I know why...it has been discovered.  I know people like to see "the way it was" but we all want a home that is appealing and Bluffton has that appeal.  And we are only miles from one of the most desirable beaches in the country.  So we are blessed to be in this corner of South Carolina with all the wonderful attributes.  I am thrilled I can share this with buyers as they discover this special place also.

Charter One Realty: What are your favorite shops and restaurants in our community and why?

Mary Aiana: Love May River Grill, good food with consistent quality. Love Tropical Smoothie for lunch and First Watch. Both have good healthy food! Alljoy Donuts are a special treat! Love Downtown Deli and Alvin Ords for lunch! Great food and local owners!! I worry about what is going to happen to local restaurants with this COVID 19 closures!

Charter One Realty: Please complete the sentence: “Home wouldn’t be home without . . .”

Mary Aiana: My cats!
