If you are looking for things to do in Beaufort, you are definitely in the right place. It’s hard to go wrong when visiting this charming town located right on the water. Picturesque naturescapes and centuries of history make this hidden gem a growing attraction to out-of-towners who previously only visited Hilton Head when in this area.

It’s no secret the Lowcountry is known for outdoor activities. Downtown Beaufort and surrounding areas offer a plethora of options, from admiring the many waterways, taking a boat out for another point of view, exploring nature trails and parks, visiting the gorgeous beaches, and endless golfing - there is much to do.

We used the inspiration of budding Spring weather to curate this list for you. It’s the ideal time of year to spend the whole day outdoors. From starting the day with a bike ride around a new park to dining at a new restaurant and finishing with a sunset, there is something for everyone to do in Beaufort.

This round-up of activities includes popular outings and some more local favorites. Read on for what’s going in in the Lowcountry.

Outdoor Markets

Shopping outdoors is a wonderful experience this time of year. The weather is great, it’s a COVID-19 friendly activity and it is great to support our local businesses.

Markets in the spring give us a bounty of things to choose from. Local favorite fresh seafood, flowers, cheeses, and of course, produce! Here are two public markets you must try this Spring:

  • Spring Market of Beaufort: Saturday, April 3rd, 10 am - 4 pm

  • Port Royal Farmers Market:  Saturdays 8:30 am to noon in Heritage Park (year-round)

For a real locals-only experience, be sure to enjoy the Port Royal Farmer’s Market, then head to Fishcamp for a bloody mary. Take it to-go and stroll down 11th Street, then back around to 10th Street for a quick loop through Port Royal’s exceptionally charming residential area.

Experiences by the Water

There’s more to the beach than sand and sunshine! Beaufort and surrounding neighborhoods are heralded places to fish, go crabbing, and hop on a boat. There are water sports, camping, ferries, and more at Hunting Island State Park.

Hunting Island is off the beaten path and worth the 30-minute drive from Beaufort proper. If there’s only ONE thing you do during your trip to Beaufort, make sure it’s a trip to Hunting Island.

  • Be sure to check out the lighthouse, even from a distance. You can climb it if you choose!

  • Experience the fallen trees in the shoreline for a completely different kind of beach-scape.

  • Rent a kayak and explore the Lowcountry waterways or charter a fishing trip. Captains typically know where to venture to get the catch!

Best Beaufort Restaurants and Shops

Enjoy a fun outdoor dining experience at restaurants on or near the water for that can’t-miss afternoon breeze. We missed being able to spend Spring frequenting our favorite little spots in 2020, so we’re excited to get out this year and enjoy it!

And for some retail therapy, be sure to visit Scout’s Southern Market and order the Sweet Tea Float for a fun warm-weather treat.

Picnics in the Park

For a little bit of both worlds, enjoy quaint shops and a glimpse of the beautiful waterways at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park on the river. On the way to the park, order lunch or dinner to go and take it to the iconic bench swings to enjoy a little bit of nature with your meal.
